Three years ago, my world caved in on itself when my dad decided to take his own life. At the start of May, I'll be cycling round the Isle of Arran - twice - to raise money for Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH). SAMH provide vital services across Scotland helping to prevent suicide, tackle addiction and run peer support groups. As well as wanting to do a route which will kick my arse (180km all told), this ride will have a lot of personal meaning for me. I last tried to cycle around Arran with my dad a good 13 years ago now. We had barely reached Blackwaterfoot when my front tyre burst, meaning we had to abandon the whole thing. So this is two laps round the island, one for me and one for him, to symbolise the journey we never got to complete together.
